Olmsted Point, with Clouds Rest and Half Dome

Undoubtedly, Olmsted Point gives some of the best views in Yosemite National Park. Certainly, this includes Tenaya Lake, Half Dome, Mount Conness, etc. Actually, it was named after the architect Frederick Law Olmsted.

To the south and southwest are granite slopes that contain many glacial erratics. At length, these rocks were deposited by glaciers as they moved over terrain and wouldn’t normally be found in the locality.

Clouds Rest is a thin ridge of rock, rising 5,000 feet (1,500 m) above Tenaya Creek. In 1851, members of the Mariposa Battalion invaded Yosemite and named the ridge Clouds Rest because clouds were seen settled along the peak. It can be seen from many viewpoints throughout Yosemite National Park.

Also, Half Dome was called Tissa’ack (Tis-sa’ack) by the original inhabitants of Yosemite Valley (Ahwahneechees). According to legend, its face is streaked with the tears of Tissa’ack.

Half Dome was first climbed in 1875 by George Anderson. Evidently, he drilled holes in the granite surface to help his ascent. For some of the stages, he actually climbed barefoot with a pitch-pine coating on his feet to help prevent him from slipping.

Many short and easy hikes can be taken from the parking lot adjacent to the road. However, note that the trail to Clouds Rest is 7.2 miles (11.6 km) long from the Tioga Pass Road.
