Paul Edmondson is the author of Great Spirit of Yosemite: The Story of Chief Tenaya – a native American historical fiction. Yosemite National Park and Mono Lake provide magnificent backdrops for this Native American novel. The book also includes photographs taken by the author and illustrated maps. This acclaimed 5-star ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐rated novel is based on true historical events around the time of the California Gold Rush. It tells of the hardships and devastation dealt to the indigenous people (the Ahwahneechees) living in Yosemite Valley at that time.

🏹 Gold prospectors and new settlers took over land where indigenous groups had been living for millennia. This invasion led to clashes between the different factions, leading to violence, robbery, betrayals, and murders. To protect the new settlers and traders, the newly elected California State Governor authorized the formation of the Mariposa Battalion. In 1851, two Companies of soldiers invaded Yosemite Valley during the Mariposa Indian War, tracking the Ahwaheechees into their homeland, with a brief to remove the people and take them into Indian reservations.

Great Spirit of Yosemite: The Story of Chief Tenaya tells the tale of resistance put up by their shrewd Chief Tenaya and their ultimate fate.
