Sentinel Bridge is located where the old Yosemite Village once stood. It was originally constructed in 1918-19 and completely replaced in 1994. From the upstream side of the bridge, there are breathtaking views of Half Dome. Great reflections can be seen in the Merced River. As the sun goes down, about an hour or so before sunset, Half Dome will turn a golden-orange, red, or, at times, pink. At sunrise it’s possible to find mist or clouds around Half Dome, making some interesting photographic opportunities. There are also great views of upper Yosemite Falls from Sentinel Bridge.

To the south of the river is Sentinel Meadow, named because of its proximity to Sentinel Rock – a high, precipitous peak of rocks on the south cliff of the valley, opposite Yosemite Falls. It was given this name by the Josiah Whitney survey of 1863 due to its resemblance to a watchtower.
