Video Reading and PDF Book Extract from Great Spirit of Yosemite
To get a “feel” for the book, Great Spirit of Yosemite: The Story of Chief Tenaya, Paul gives an extract and reading from his historical novel in the sections below.
Firstly, he reads a section from the early part of Great Spirit of Yosemite in the video below. This includes a description of the lives of the Ahwahneechees from the time that Tenaya’s father was Chief. This was during the latter part of the 18th century. It describes Yosemite Valley and the way of life of the Ahwahneechees, who lived in harmony with the nature of the valley and the Spirit of Yosemite. The video includes maps and photographs from the book, taken by Paul in Yosemite National Park and around Mono Lake. These specifically accompany the reading.
The second extract, in PDF format, describes events and conversation that appears later in the book, as Chief Tenaya has a second encounter with his nemesis, Major James Savage, of the Mariposa Battalion. Tenaya craftily tries to mollify Savage and divert his attention away from his people, who hide in the valley. These events occur during the Mariposa War in 1851, during the California Gold Rush.
